Applications to attend the School must include:
- A completed application form (web-based)
- A letter of reference and ranking from the candidate’s professor or
supervisor
Please use this application form.
Please read the conditions for participation and the guidelines before filling
out the form.
The applications deadline is 23 April 2012.
If necessary, use “N/A” for fields that are not applicable.
Conditions for Participation
The programme of the school will be at a level appropriate for PhD students in experimental particle physics. It is anticipated that students working on phenomenology (if not too far from particle-physics experiment) will also be accepted. The School will be open to junior post-docs (typically less than two years after completing their PhD), and also advanced MSc students provided their prior knowledge is comparable with that of the principal target audience so that they can benefit from the courses offered at the School. The working language of the School will be English. Participants must therefore have a good understanding of English to enable them to benefit from the School. Students from countries in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe are particularly invited to apply to the school, but applications from other regions will also be considered.
Application Guidelines
The application form should be completed and sent as soon as possible. The application includes a 100-word summary of the student’s current work that will be taken into consideration in the selection process. The submission of the completed application form must be accompanied by a letter of reference and ranking from the student’s professor or supervisor (signed and dated hard copy with letterhead of referee’s institution). Applications without a reference letter will not be considered. The professor or supervisor’s name and the date of the reference letter should be indicated in the appropriate boxes on the Web application form; and the letter should be sent to Helene Haller, the CERN Organizing Secretary (see Enquiries and Correspondence). The letter may be sent by fax or email, with the hard copy to follow by post. Please note that the letter of recommendation from the professor or supervisor should include a ranking of the candidate relative to other students at a similar stage in their careers. Candidates should ensure that their application form and the letter of reference reach the CERN Organizing Secretary by the applications deadline. The selection of the students will be made by members of the International Organizing Committee together with the Local Director. All applicants will be informed in May whether or not they have been selected.
Fees
The fee for attending the School will be Yen 100,000 per student, and will cover tuition, board and lodging from dinner on 14 October to breakfast on 27 October 2012, as well as refreshments during the morning and afternoon breaks, in addition to excursions and some social activities. The fee does not include travel expenses from participants’ home institutes to Fukuoka and back, visa fees (where required) or the cost of insurance covering illness and accidents that is required for all participants. Details of the arrangements for payment of the fees will be announced to selected participants in due course.
Wherever possible participants are expected to obtain funding for the fee as well as their travel from their home countries. However, some sponsorship will be available for a limited number of students from countries with developing programmes in particle physics. Eligible students are therefore encouraged to apply even if they do not expect to obtain funding from their home institute to attend the School.
